Submission on the Online Casino Gambling Bill

Mana Mokopuna - Children's Commissioner is concerned that the Bill fails to recognise the heightened risks and harms associated with online casino gambling by seeking only to regulate rather than comprehensively ban online casino gambling in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Bill would also reverse the ban on online casino gambling advertising despite the evidence that this contributes to the normalisation and social acceptance of gambling, particularly among mokopuna.

We oppose this Bill in its entirety and strongly recommend that should it proceed, amendments to better protect mokouna and their whānau from the high-risk nature of online casino gambling and its associated harms should be made.
