Mana Mokopuna framework
The Mana Mokopuna framework guides how we monitor places of detention.
It focuses on the experiences and wellbeing of mokopuna, including whether they feel safe, supported, and respected. It also looks at whether outcomes for mokopuna Māori are improving and whether mokopuna Māori are supported to connect with their whakapapa.

Where we monitor
We monitor a range of places where mokopuna may be detained.
These places include care and protection residences, youth justice residences, community remand homes, and Mother and Baby Units (MBUs) in prisons.
Our role is to help ensure mokopuna are treated with dignity and respect and that their rights are protected.
How monitoring works
Our monitoring team regularly visits places of detention across Aotearoa.
During visits, we speak with mokopuna and staff, observe daily life within the facility, and assess how mokopuna are being treated. We use a monitoring framework to guide our work and make sure our assessments are consistent.
