New report puts children and young people’s voices at heart of online safety conversation

A new report from Mana Mokopuna – Children’s Commissioner shares children and young people’s views on digital safety.

Children and young people’s perspectives on a safer digital world brings forward the voices of a diverse group of mokopuna from across Aotearoa New Zealand, including their views on the proposed social media ban for under-16s.

While their views on online restrictions were mixed, there was broad agreement that more must be done to prevent online harm and protect children and young people in the digital world.

“Their views reflect the complexity of the issue - with different experiences and opinions, much like those held by adults.""

Children’s Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad says decisions are currently being considered that will directly affect mokopuna, yet their voices have been largely missing from the public conversation.

“Children and young people are experts in their own lives, and they have a right to be involved in decisions that affect them. The online world is a core part of their everyday reality, and they understand both the risks and the benefits in ways adults often don’t.

The report comes at a time of increasing international focus on online safety for children and young people. Mokopuna who contributed to the report reflected this broader concern, with many agreeing that stronger action is needed to prevent online harm.

“Mokopuna are clear that online harm is real and impacts their wellbeing. They want adults - including decision-makers, the tech sector, and communities - to do more to keep them safe, but they also want solutions that reflect their lived realities.

“What comes through in this report is that mokopuna have thoughtful, practical ideas to balance safety with access to online spaces. They value the positive aspects of being online, such as connection, learning, and self-expression, while recognising the risks."

The Commissioner is encouraging policymakers to consider a balanced approach that prioritises reducing harm and improving online safety systems, considers a range of tools and safeguards alongside regulatory measures, and involves young people in its design.

“If we want effective, balanced solutions, we need to listen to the people most affected. This report helps ensure young perspectives are part of the national conversation.”
