Children’s Commissioner supports closure of Gloriavale Christian School

Children's Commissioner Jane Searle says the wellbeing, safety and rights of children must be the priority following yesterday's confirmation that Gloriavale Christian School's registration will be cancelled.

“I support the Ministry of Education's decision to close the school following its fresh findings about the physical and emotional safety of children there,” says Ms Searle.

“Every child has the right to a good-quality education that helps them learn, thrive and reach their full potential. Children growing up in Gloriavale must have the same opportunities, support and protection as any other child in Aotearoa New Zealand.”

Ms Searle says attention must now turn to supporting children and families through what may be a challenging period of change.

“The Ministry of Education has made my team aware of their ongoing work to support the Gloriavale children.

“Children and families will need carefully managed transition plans, practical assistance and wraparound support to ensure their education, wellbeing and sense of stability are protected throughout this process.

“As new schooling and support arrangements are considered, the children’s wellbeing must be the top priority.”
