Submission to the Social Services and Community Select Committee on the Deepfake Digital Harm and Exploitation Bill

Mana Mokopuna supports the Deepfake Digital Harm and Exploitation Bill, which updates the Crimes Act and the Harmful Digital Communications Act.

The Bill makes it a crime to share deepfakes of someone aged 16 or over without their consent. We recommend raising the age of consent to 18 years. This is to ensure the protection of all children, consistent with the Children's Convention and other laws relating to intimate images of children under 18 years.

We also make other recommendations for a holistic online safety system, including an e-Safety Regulator and banning nudify apps.
